Electronic Reader Running Doom 2

Apr 8, 2011

Being a huge fan of electronic readers, I could not pass this up. This is a leaked video of Doom 2 running on "PocketBook 360 Plus" prototype, recorded by a PocketBook employee. To be precise, it's running PrBoom - a Linux port of the original game from id Software.

This looks pretty amazing - the FPS seems really nice for an e-ink screen.

UPDATE: I've just dug up that the e-Ink screen model being used on this device is "e-Ink Vizplex V110". Full device specs:
Screen - 5″ V110
CPU - FreeScale i.MX35 ARM11 533MHz
RAM - 128mb RAM

Was the video, by any chance, originally posted a week ago today?

(yes, I mean it's probably an April fool prank)

No :) The author claims it's genuine...

First thing I look for in these videos is the ghosting. Most fakes forget that for an e-ink display to fully redraw an image, it needs to blank out the entire screen (hence the weird inverse effect you get on most e-readers when you turn the page.) If you don't do that, then a shadow of the previous image still lingers on the display. Most people forget that in their fakes, but here the ghosting is both present and seems consistent with an e-ink display's fast refresh. It would be quite playable, though I imagine things would get pretty grimy in fairly short order. I'm impressed. This is either real or an expertly done fake.

I've finished doom2 without any cheats. I wouldn't call this playable at any of the difficult parts.

I'm still very impressed though.

Pretty cool but can anyone tell me what the music track is?
