Lazy SEO #2

Jan 11, 2011

I already blogged about "Lazy SEO" - thats what I call it - one of the regular promotion tasks we do here at Jitbit.

In short "Lazy SEO" is:
  1. Checking Google Analytics for keywords that already bring some (not most) visitors to your website
  2. Tune you website for these exact keywords - by adding a couple of links with this anchor and slightly adjusting the content
For example: it is almost impossible for us to compete on the term "Helpdesk Software". But there are queries that already bring some visitors to us, like .NET help desk or web based help desk. By adding a couple of links and adjusting the product description you can slightly increase the search traffic.

It's crucial to choose the right keywords for "Lazy SEO" and here are the rules to follow:
  • It should not be a query that returns you on the 10-th page of the search results. It should be the one that returns your website on the 1st or 2nd pages, not further down in the search results. Your goal is to jump from #10 to #1-2, not from #54 to #29.
  • It should not be a phrase that already ranks you #1 in Google's results. In our case, it'd make no sense to optimize for "asp.net help desk".
  • It should not be an unpopular query. You have to know the monthly searches number. Know exactly, instead of guessing guess. This is the step that requires paying - you have to either buy an AdWords account that has a "keyword tool" in it, or buy some third-party keyword database
